God Is For You

Have you ever wondered how many promises there are in the Bible?

Some Bible scholars have stated that there are close to 8000 promises contained in the Bible; other opposing views state the number is closer to 3500. But no matter which number you believe, the fact is that this Book contains a lot of promises for us as believers.

Here are just a few:

  • I will protect you.

  • I will be your strength.

  • I will answer you.

  • I will provide for you.

  • I will give you peace.

  • I will always love you.

  • I will be with you always.

I think that we can all agree that we are living in turbulent times -

We’ve got a pandemic in our world, we’ve got groups of people being treated badly because of the color of their skin, and we live in a country that is more divided than it’s ever been.

As a matter of fact, it may feel like 2020 has been one giant storm.

BUT NO STORM HAS THE POWER TO CANCEL THE PROMISES OF GOD IN OUIR LIVES, UNLESS WE ALLOW IT.

Our HOPE is in this statement:

Jesus is our anchor - in every storm

We are not alone in our troubles. During the days of the early church Christians were facing great persecution. Followers of Jesus were persecuted just for following Him.

It must have been tempting to turn back.

To question whether it was worth it. To just go back to the way things were before Jesus arrived on the scene.

But they persevered………….even to the point of death.

Which tells me they found something in Jesus that they didn’t find in the “old way” - in empty religious practices.

How about you?

Have you found something better in Jesus or are struggling with the temptation to turn back?

To walk away?

Some of you have. Some of you aren’t in church. You’re not online. You’ve found other things to do. You aren’t engaged with a faith community.

I am not saying that in judgment. I’m just stating facts.

And I want you to know that if it ever gets too hard for you out there we at Cornerstone will welcome you here with arms wide open. We’re like planet fitness around here – a judgment free zone

But I want to bring you some HOPE today.

We don’t have to turn back

We can remain steadfast if our hope is in Jesus

Hebrews 10:19-25

A Call to Persevere in Faith

19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

These verses are full of HOPE.

Let us draw near

22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.

We have unhindered access to the grace of God

…to the throne of Grace

You don’t have to get cleaned up to go to God……….Jesus did it for us.

He wants you in the condition you are in. He loves you in the condition that you are in.

You don’t have to put on your fancy clothes or pretend to be anything.

That’s why the sign over the door of our church says “Come As You Are”.

Because that’s the condition Jesus wants you in. As You Are.

Verse 23

23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful

Without wavering is not easy.

Without Wavering…………..can be hard some times

That’s why we need to come together

Because we need to be reminded that God is for us…………..not against us

Even when the whole dang world goes crazy…………..God is for us.

We don’t have to waiver.

We can just stand on his promises, on his Word.

Father God, I choose you today. I choose your Son, Jesus Christ, as my source of hope and comfort today. I choose to stand on your Word. To stand with you and for you. Help me not to waiver. Remind me of the promises that you have for me and let them fill me with Hope for the future. You are good. You are faithful. You love me - even in my mess. I invite you into all my messy places and to submit to the process of having your love transform me. Have your way in me today Lord. And when the doubts come Lord give me ears to hear your voice reminding me that you are for me. Always. Amen.
