In the Midst of Your Suffering

One of the biggest misconceptions that we face is the idea that life becomes a whole lot easier when you're a Christian. Nothing could be further from the truth. God never promises us storm-free lives. But he does promise that in Him we will find the path through the storms that life throws at us.

John 16:33

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

The Bible is clear that we can be happy and experience peace even in the midst of life's challenges and trials.

The word would love to convince us that our happiness is completely dependent on our circumstances. In other words, you can only experience true happiness if your life is going great.

We all have trials and circumstances that we deal with every day. What a miserable existence we would be condemned to if we could only be happy during the fleeting moments we are not involved in a trial or circumstance.

As a matter of fact, God calls us to be happy even though we experience trials. We are reminded to place our hope in Jesus. He alone can make a way through the hardest trials and difficulties we face. He alone can give us peace as we walk through our storms. It is often in the midst of our storms where Jesus reveals himself to us and takes us into a deeper, more intimate relationship with Him.

In all honesty, I am in the middle of a storm. I'm walking through it as I write this and I have no idea how this part of my story is going to end. But God knows. The past few days and weeks have taught me that no matter what I walk through I can invite God into my circumstances and I can trust that He is going to move on my behalf. As a matter of fact, I've already seen His hand all over my present circumstances. He is with us. He is for us. He loves us.

If you too are walking through a time of great suffering, I want to share a few of the verses that have been giving me hope lately:

John 16:24 | Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.

Psalm 32:7 | You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.

Nehemiah 8:10b | "...And do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength."

Isaiah 12:6 | "... Shout, and sing for joy, O inhabitant of Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel."

Romans 15:13 | May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Father God, I thank you today for hope and joy, even in the midst of our suffering. I thank you that I can cling to you in the middle of my storms; that you are my hiding place and my protection. Let us draw even closer to you during the days we walk through that are just plain hard. Meet us in those places Lord. Strengthen us. Encourage us. Love us. Amen.
